I spent the weekend playing the Modern Warfare beta and was impressed by how much has changed in this year’s iteration of the famed fps. Here are some of my thoughts on the beta and some things I would like to see improved before the October 25th launch date.

Year to year Call of Duty is more or less the same game with a different code of paint on it with a few new gimmicks but just from the beta I can tell that Infinity Ward is trying to do much more with this year’s entry. The feel of the game, while still unmistakably Call of Duty feels a lot more fresh than previous iterations. Map traversal is smooth and responsive. Your soldier’s movement as it interacts with your gun’s sway and recoil feels satisfying and natural. As well as each gun has a unique feel each of them very satisfying. IW has taken the time to make every gameplay style feel good and viable and there is a way for everyone to interact with the map differently and still make an equal contribution to the team.

I spent most of my time in the beta playing ground war. This is Call of Duty’s first time doing a Battlefield-like large team battles and so far it’s off to a good start. IW was able keep the frantic gameplay COD is known for and put it on a large map with vehicles. The one map we got to play wasn’t the greatest mainly due to the fact that there was a lot of buildings so killstreaks were not too effective. However, killstreaks could be a problem in the mode as a whole, mainly UAV’s. With such a large number of players on the map UAV’s are being called in constantly and unless you decide to run ghost perk it is almost impossible to run a successful flank route due to your location being broadcast to the other team at all times. I could see the benefit of implementing a squad point system similar to what is done in Battlefield V. In this the squad would collect points as a team to call in recon streaks so that way UAV’s are not being spammed.

For classic MP I stayed in the domination playlist and there really is not much to be said here besides it plays like COD. All the maps were fun and interesting with a lot more freedom to traverse them than what you had in previous titles. The map layouts also didn’t have the three-lane formula that we’ve become used to in Call of Duty giving the maps a more realistic and authentic feel. Overall the classic MP for Modern Warfare is going to give fans more COD MP and that’s all it has to do.

I didn’t touch the competitive gunfight mode in the beta but I plan on including it in my full review next month. Overall Modern Warfare is shaping up to be a solid multiplayer addition to the series offering a fresh look to gameplay and numerous new ways to play. We’ll have to wait and see what tweaks are made from feedback come October 25th but until then I am eagerly awaiting this games release.
